Loss of a parent is the loss of the guide in our lives. Here the Angel guides the puppy on it’s first new outing. We miss our guide in life, and wish for the days that we were just a pup, with a guide to care for us. In our hearts the guide is still there and strong, but it takes a long time to reach inside and remember the words. When we share with others we can hear our guide again, and fly on the wings of eagles.

Wind Beneath My Wings

It must have been cold there in the shadow, to never have sunlight on your face. You were content to let me shine, that’s your way, you always walked a step behind. So I was the one with all the glory, while you were the one with all the mystery, a beautiful face without a name, for so long, a beautiful smile to hide the pain. Did you ever know that your My Hero, and everything that I like to be, and I can fly higher than an eagle, if you are the wind beneath my wings. If it had appeared to go unnoticed, but I got it all Here in my Heart, I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it, I would be nothing without you. Did you ever know that your My Hero, and everything I wish I could be. I could fly higher than an eagle if you are the wind beneath my wings.

I have been asked why use a puppy as the symbol for loss of a parent. I thought of this often, because the child is like the little puppy. The parent gives the unconditional love and guidance that helps the child learn the do's and don'ts of the world. They guide them not to touch the hot stove, not to go into the street, to eat all the good food for them. They care endlessly for their needs, food, shelter, clothing and education. They find all the pitfalls in life and help the child make the choice not to fall. When we lose a parent, we lose that guide, except in the knowledge they already have given us, the teaching they already shared. As the child that has lost a parent, we become confused, with feelings of loss of purpose and abandonment. It takes time to rekindle the knowledge that our parent has already given us, and to listen to the inner voice of their continued love and guidance.
